Turn your fireplace completely off, including the pilot light.
Wait for the unit to cool completely before wiping with a damp cloth; wiping hot glass can cause thermal shock that can break the glass.
Put a drop sheet down when cleaning to protect your carpets.
Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the logs; the materials may irritate your skin or eyes.
Replace the logs exactly as shown in your owner's manual after cleaning or moving them.
Clean the glass periodically. When the glass is cool, put on gloves and eye protection, remove the glass and its frame, remembering the position of the glass and the gasket(s), and clean the glass. If the glass or the gasket(s) appear to be damaged or degraded, contact a licensed gas contractor before using the fireplace again.
Don't use abrasive cleaners on the glass. Check your owner's manual for recommended cleaners.
Take good care
Keep your owner's manual and manufacturer's operating instructions handy.
Keep control compartments, burners and circulating air passageways and fans clean. To do this, shut off the pilot light and use a vacuum with a crevice or dusting attachment.
If your fireplace is installed during construction or renovations, don't operate it until the area is thoroughly cleaned. Drywall dust and other contaminants may harm the fan, motors and burners.
Have a licensed gas contractor clean and inspect your fireplace, and vent as recommended by the manufacturer.
Warning signs
There are almost always warning signs that a fireplace isn't working properly:
pilot light outages
"booming" noises on ignition
delayed ignition (slow to start up)
excessive soot or corrosion inside the fireplace or on the vent
a continuous or intermittent odour — either the "rotten egg" or sulphur smell of natural gas or a sharp odour that causes eyes to sting
symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: nausea, headaches, lethargy or other flu-like symptoms
