Renewing & cancelling

You can expect to be contacted by your natural gas marketer before your contract expires. At that time, you can either:

  • renew the contract, as is
  • cancel

The evergreen contract

If there's no communication between you and your gas marketer before your contract's expiry date, your existing contract may automatically renew for another 12-month term at the same rate as the expiring contract.

This is called evergreening. Evergreen contracts automatically renew themselves for a 12-month term on their designated expiry date.

Evergreening will continue until you contact your gas marketer to either:

  • cancel the contract, or
  • begin negotiations on a new contract

An evergreen contract does away with the need for successive contract renegotiations, and is a useful tool for consumers satisfied with the terms of their existing natural gas supply contract.

Contract cancellation

Most contracts contain an early termination provision so read your contract carefully before signing.

This provision allows you to break your contract -- usually with a penalty -- but before the contract runs the entire length of its term.
