Engine availability
NGV grants
As an added incentive to switch to natural gas vehicles, Terasen Gas offers grants worth up to $10,000. (Total grant funds available per year are limited.)
Factory-built vehicles
Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) can run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Compressed natural gas
Cummins Westport Inc.’s medium and heavy duty truck engines not only provide lower emissions and improved operating cost performance, but also offer the same power and torque as similar diesel engines.
Cummins Westport engines are perfectly suited to:
- city transit buses
- refuse trucks
- street sweepers
- yard trucks
The benefits
A truck or bus powered by a natural gas engine is noticeably quieter than the same vehicle powered by a diesel engine. Communities will literally hear the difference.
And with lower fuel costs, CNG engines are an economical alternative, contributing to lower fleet operating costs.
Liquefied natural gas
Westport Innovations Inc. is a world leader in developing environmental technologies. They have internal combustion engines that run on clean-burning gaseous fuels such as natural gas, hydrogen and hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas.
Westport’s LNG heavy duty engines have six million miles of on-road experience behind them.
Their LNG system for heavy duty trucks offers class-leading emissions performance, while maintaining equal horsepower, torque and efficiency to diesel engines.
Westport’s proving grounds
Westport is a BC company, but its technology is well showcased in California.
- Sacramento – transit fleet
- Los Angeles – transit and refuse fleets
- San Diego – transit fleet
- Fresno – municipal vehicle fleet
- San Francisco – waste hauling
Clean and green
Westport LNG heavy duty truck engines , you’ll see:
- 15 to 20 per cent reduction of tank to wheels greenhouse gas emissions
- 50 per cent reduction of NOx
- 50 per cent reduction of particulate matter
After-market conversions
High mileage, light duty vehicles can benefit from after market conversions.
Current pump prices are 40 per cent less than gasoline. So the payback on higher mileage vehicles is typically less than two years. Natural gas conversions would be good for return-to-home fleets such as:
- taxis
- shuttles
- police
- couriers
- municipal vehicles
Conversion companies are located throughout the Lower Mainland and grants are available from Terasen to help offset the initial capital cost.
Two companies that offer conversion services are:
- Eco Fuel Systems Inc.
Eco Fuel’s innovative technology has revolutionized the alternative-fuel conversion industry by consistently delivering products and solutions that satisfy not just today’s, but tomorrow’s OEM requirements.
- Technocarb Equipment
Technocarb’s motto "Alternative Fuel Power" reflects their belief that their alternative fuel conversion systems are among the world's best, giving excellent power, driveability, emissions, and efficiency at a reasonable cost.
