Government policies
Natural gas vehicles (NGV) support cross-government initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutants from the transportation market.
Use of NGVs can help BC achieve three environmental goals cited in the 2007 throne speech:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 33 per cent below current levels by 2020.
- New tailpipe emission standards for all vehicles will be phased in between 2009 and 2016.
- A low carbon fuel standard will be established.
Natural gas vehicles support BC’s energy plan
Becoming energy efficient is one of the province’s goals in its 2007 energy plan.
With natural gas plentiful in BC and many companies developing transportation technologies to use it based here, natural gas vehicles have a bright future.
Provincial dollars support NGV research
Technological advances in the use of natural gas as transportation fuel will be supported through the new, $25 million
Innovative Clean Energy Fund.
The fund will support projects that:
- address specific BC energy and environmental issues identified by the government
- showcase BC technologies with a strong potential for international market demand
- feature energy technology that is new, or commercial technology not currently used in BC
