Biogas is a clean energy source that can be used for heating applications, electricity generation or as a transportation fuel. Biogas is primarily composed of methane (CH4). This is the same gas that makes up about 96% of natural gas, which consumers all around the world have learned to rely on for decades.
Biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion of organic material from sources such as landfill sites, wastewater treatment facilities, agricultural waste management and certain industrial processes. It is often referred to as 'renewable natural gas' or 'bio-methane'.
Biogas collection and management systems capture the greenhouse gases that would otherwise be lost directly into the atmosphere. Processing and injecting biogas into the pipeline system also provides the benefit of replacing traditionally sourced natural gas with a 'carbon neutral fuel'.
