Fraser River South Arm Crossing Upgrade Project

Overview

Terasen Gas is upgrading the natural gas transmission pipelines crossing the Fraser River between Delta and Richmond. The Fraser River South Arm Crossing Upgrade project will improve pipeline seismic stability, address river erosion concerns and improve safety and reliability for thousands of customers.

Meeting our commitments

As part of Terasen’s ongoing commitment to safety, the replacement pipelines are being constructed within the existing Terasen Gas rights of way. The construction of the twin pipelines (1.4 km long x 508 mm (20”) x 610 mm (24”) will consist of horizontal drilling technology—a proven, cost effective method with the lowest environmental and property impact.

Providing service to our cities

The twin pipes provide natural gas service to approximately 220,000 customers in Richmond, Vancouver, North Vancouver City and District, West Vancouver and parts of Burnaby.

Status

The upgrade project was approved by the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) in March.

The pipeline crossings are expected to be in service by December 2010 with final restoration of the site complete by summer 2011.

Natural gas delivery will not be affected during the pipeline upgrade.
