Terasen Gas Launches Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Program
Local company converts 100 forklifts from propane, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering fuel costs
Surrey, B.C. – Terasen Gas today announced a Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Program (CNGV) to promote clean, efficient natural gas vehicles as an energy alternative in B.C.’s transportation sector. The program supports the Government of B.C.’s Energy Plan and provides businesses with innovative energy solutions to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
“Through our CNGV program, Terasen is building on our role as an energy solutions provider, assisting B.C. businesses to lower costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Randy Jespersen, President and CEO, Terasen Inc. “Our provincial government has taken a leadership position in setting greenhouse gas reduction targets, and now the business sector is stepping in with economic and effective solutions to realize those objectives.”
Terasen Gas is also announcing the first project under the CNGV program, involving Terasen Gas, Euro Asia Transload and FuelMaker, which will see the conversion of 100 forklifts from propane to natural gas. The $500,000 project includes the extension of the Terasen Gas system to deliver natural gas to a newly installed FuelMaker Corp. compressions system at Euro Asia Transload’s Richmond and Burnaby warehouses and the installation of a FuelMaker Corp. compression system to fuel each forklift.
"We are excited about being involved in a new energy project with Terasen that improves our business efficiency and produces benefits for the environment and our employees’ health,” said Coleman Tokei, Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Euro Asia Transload. “In the first three weeks of our project we've noticed that our machines run quieter and more efficiently, and our warehouse’s indoor air quality has improved."
Approximately 40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in B.C. come from the transportation sector and Terasen Gas is committed to working with businesses helping them reduce those emissions.
“I congratulate Terasen and its partners in supporting the BC Energy Plan by promoting clean, efficient natural gas vehicles as an energy alternative,” said Richard Neufeld, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “It is through the support and commitment of companies like yours that we will reach the Province’s climate action goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020.”
Under the new CNGV program, Terasen Gas will support businesses by:
- continuing to invest in developments like the Forklift conversion project
- “bringing home” to B.C. the innovation in natural gas engine technology that businesses here are already exporting to other countries
- strengthening Terasen Gas’s role as a central agency of expertise for businesses looking to convert to natural gas vehicles and fleets
