Terasen Gas congratulates Environmental Mind Grind champions
SURREY, B.C. – Competition was intense as students from the Interior, Okanagan and Nanaimo squared off at the 2009 Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind playoffs held on May 8 in Lake Country.
“We’re very impressed with all of the students who competed this year,” said Ruth Sulentich, Community Relations Manager, Terasen Gas. “Conservation is such an important habit and way of life that students are embracing. With this knowledge, students are able to teach the conservation message to friends and family.”
Leading up to these playoffs, 113 school teams comprising 422 students competed in regional competitions; the regional event winners squared off at this past weekend’s championships. Students came out to display their environmental stewardship and compete for the championship, scholarships and prizes.
Finalists from Penticton, Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops and Nanaimo competed on Friday. The following teams won first place in their overall categories:
- Home Learners of Penticton – elementary school
- Okanagan Mission Secondary School from Kelowna – middle school
- Team 2 from Rutland Secondary School in Kelowna – high school
As the title sponsor, Terasen Gas began a new tradition last year, awarding each member of the winning high school team $1,000 for post secondary education, and each member of the runner- up high school team a $300 bursary.
Committed to fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among youth, the Mind Grind is organized by Environmental Education partners from the City of Kelowna, Regional District of Central Okanagan, City of Kamloops, Nanaimo Recycling Exchange, Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and the North Okanagan Regional District.
“All the games were really close and fast-paced,” said Tracy Guidi, Environmental Technician from the City of Kelowna and one of the event organizers. “The games were exciting to watch, but probably most amazing was the amount of environmental information these kids learned. I think all the adults watching the games were in awe.”
The Mind Grind is a game show style trivia contest that brings together students from elementary, middle and high school and promotes responsible environmental stewardship. Teams of students from Grades 4 to 12 sign up in January and work with their teachers learning from specially prepared study packages covering many topics including: waste reduction, energy conservation, air quality, transportation demand management, forestry health, species and spaces, water conservation and watershed health.
