Terasen Gas Mind Grind tests local students’ environmental knowledge - Finalists to win scholarships

April 18, 2008

SURREY, B.C. -  Hundreds of B.C. Interior school students are celebrating Earth Day early on Saturday,   April 19  by putting their knowledge of environmental issues to the test in the first round of the 2008 Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind Challenge.

The two-stage Mind Grind event is an academic “Reach for the Top” trivia contest that brings together students from elementary, middle and high schools, and promotes responsible environmental stewardship.

“This is our fourth year supporting the Mind Grind, which is not only fun for the students but teaches them about local environmental issues,” said Ruth Sulentich, community relations manager, Terasen Gas, Kelowna. “There’s also the opportunity for the winning team and the runners up to share $4,000 in scholarship money awarded at the regional finals in May.”

The Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind is organized by the EECO - Heroes (Environmental Educators of the Central Okanagan). The EECO Heroes come from the City of Kelowna Environment and Transportation Divisions, Regional Parks, Regional Waste Reduction and Water Smart.

Throughout the region students will participate in local first round competitions. “This challenge is being hosted in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Kamloops and Quesnel this weekend. In total there are 95 school teams and 450 kids competing,” said Rae Stewart, Kelowna waste reduction facilitator.

Teams of students from Grades 4 to 12 sign up in January and work with their teachers learning from specially prepared study packages covering many topics including: energy conservation, air quality, transportation demand management, forestry health, species and spaces, waste reduction, water conservation and watershed health.

“We’re committed to fostering a sense of stewardship among young adults through fun, educational programs, events and projects like the Mind Grind,” says Tracy Guidi, from the City of Kelowna’s Environment Division.

Regional event winners will then compete in the B.C. Interior Playoffs hosted in Kelowna on Saturday May 3, for the scholarships.
