SURREY, B.C. – Terasen volunteers, along with members of the Clay Tree Society for People with Developmental Disabilities, worked hand in hand on Saturday, May 23, making life at the Nanaimo office and worksite a little more comfortable for the 72 individuals who rely on the Society for support.

The Terasen volunteers, along with a $30,000 corporate donation, helped install a much needed wheelchair ramp at the office, removed trees, and provided other landscaping and general renovations around the property.

“We have faced many struggles and uncertainties,” said Julie Stevenson, Executive Director, Clay Tree Society. “Terasen’s Community Giving Day project has impacted our society in so many positive ways and is testament to their commitment to our community.”

The Clay Tree Society has been a member of the Nanaimo community for 52 years, providing life skills, artistic exploration and personal empowerment and independence to 72 people, ranging from ages 18 to 70. While Terasen has assisted the society in the past by donating furniture, a need for more help was identified, and Terasen volunteers from the Vancouver Island offices stepped in.

“We live and work in this community, and our volunteer efforts support the importance of being connected to the people we serve,” said Carol Greaves, Community Relations Manager, Terasen Gas. “Our neighbours were in need, and we were pleased to help.”

The Clay Tree Society project is one of three Terasen Community Giving Day projects in B.C. In Kamloops, Terasen volunteers spent the day at Bleeker Lake, revitalizing the recreation area into a family fishing and camping location. On Saturday, May 30, volunteers will assist at the Richmond Sharing Farm, planting seeds, herbs and fruit trees, improving soil and building garden beds, harvest tables and improving fencing around the farm. All three projects receive a $30,000 corporate donation from Terasen.

Terasen and its employees have long been active corporate citizens, giving back to the communities where they live and work through volunteerism and corporate donations.
