Terasen volunteers and Richmond Sharing Farm team up to grow food for needy
SURREY, B.C. – A beautiful spring day, a good cause and dedicated volunteers added up to a magnificent day “down on the farm”, helping a valued Richmond organization grow fruit and vegetables for local food banks and others in our communities living with poverty.
More than 100 Terasen employees from the Lower Mainland volunteered for the morning at the non-profit Richmond Sharing Farm, improving the soil, planting herbs, vegetables and fruit trees, constructing harvest tables, and building a structure that will be used as a healing centre.
"Our project is a wonderful example of volunteers, community organizations and corporate partners coming together to help grow food for those living in poverty,” says Mary Gazetas, Chair, Richmond Sharing Farm. “This kind of dynamic is truly all about community building.”
The Richmond Sharing Farm grows more than nine tonnes (20,000 pounds) of fruit and vegetables per year for local food banks, community kitchens and others in our communities in need.
“Every year, the Richmond Sharing Farm proves its value to the community by giving back to those in need,” said Amy Hennessy, Terasen Gas Community Relations Manager. “And that philosophy is aligned with our desire to give back and remain connected to the people we serve, in the communities where we live and work.”
The Richmond Sharing Farm project is one of three Terasen Community Giving Day events in B.C. On Saturday, May 23, Terasen volunteers from Kamloops spent the day at Bleeker Lake, revitalizing the recreation area into a family fishing and camping location. Also on Saturday, May 23, volunteers helped with renovations and repairs at Nanaimo’s Clay Tree Society for People with Developmental Disabilities. All three projects each received a $30,000 corporate donation from Terasen.
Terasen and its employees have long been active corporate citizens, giving back to the communities where they live and work through volunteerism and corporate donations.
