Kelowna, B.C. – The 2008 Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind playoffs on May 3 gave students the chance to display their stewardship knowledge, competing for the championship, scholarships and prizes.
Leading up to these playoffs, 95 school teams and 450 students competed across B.C.’s Interior, with the regional event winners squaring off at this past weekend’s championships in Kelowna.
Finalists from Penticton, Vernon, Kelowna and Kamloops competed on Saturday. The following teams won first place in their overall categories:
- Casorso Team 1, Casorso Elementary School – elementary school
- Dr. Knox Team 2, Dr. Knox Middle School – middle school
- KSS Team 2, Kelowna Secondary School – secondary school
“At Terasen Gas, we’re really impressed with all of the students who competed this year,” said Ruth Sulentich, community and aboriginal relations manager. “Their environmental stewardship is inspiring, especially at a time when energy conservation plays such a key role in our green future.”
As the title sponsor, the company began a new tradition this year with each member of the winning high school team receiving $1,000 towards their post secondary education. Each member of the runner up high school team also received a $300 bursary.
Committed to fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among youth, the Mind Grind is organized by the EECO Heroes (Environmental Educators of the Central Okanagan). The EECO Heroes come from the City of Kelowna Environment and Transportation Divisions, Regional Parks, Regional Waste Reduction and Water Smart.
“The EECO Heroes are proud to be a part of the Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind – an event that motivates students to learn about their environment, taking action to make a difference in their communities,” said Tracy Guidi, watershed coordinator, City of Kelowna.
The Mind Grind is a game show style trivia contest that brings together students from elementary, middle and high school and promotes responsible environmental stewardship. Teams of students from Grades 4 to 12 sign up in January and work with their teachers learning from specially prepared study packages covering many topics including: waste reduction, energy conservation, air quality, transportation demand management, forestry health, species and spaces, water conservation and watershed health.
