SURREY - Terasen Gas crews working through the night repaired a six inch natural gas distribution pipeline along the Lougheed Highway in Burnaby that had begun leaking natural gas.

Public safety is a number one priority for Terasen Gas. When our personnel arrived at the location of the leak late yesterday afternoon, we requested the assistance of the Burnaby Fire Department in evacuating residents on the south side of the Lougheed Highway.

Location of the leak was approximately 150 metres west of Underhill Avenue on Lougheed Highway. Terasen Gas brought the gas under control at 7:45 p.m. last night by isolating the section of pipe through five surface valves.

Repairs were complete at approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning with service restoration underway for the 39 customers that temporarily had service suspended in order to complete the repairs.

Terasen Gas continues to investigate the cause of the leak which is now determined to have resulted from a crack in the weld joining two sections of the distribution pipeline, which was installed in 1957.

The Terasen Gas transmission and distribution pipeline system has an excellent safety record. We take all possible steps to ensure our pipelines and surrounding areas are well-protected. We conduct regular leak surveys and inspections of natural gas mains, service lines, valves, meters and regulator stations throughout our system.

Terasen Gas thanks Burnaby residents, the Burnaby Fire Department and the RCMP for their patience and support in our efforts to repair and restore service.
