Terasen Gas sponsors Tribal Journeys Canoe Voyage across Pacific Northwest
SURREY, B.C. - Terasen Gas has announced its partnership with Cowichan Tribes to sponsor Tribal Journeys 2008, a celebration of Pacific Northwest First Nations and Metis culture, July 18 to August 2.
“For over a decade we have enjoyed a strong working relationship with the Cowichan First Nation, and we welcome the opportunity to offer our support as they host Tribal Journeys 2008,” said Doug Stout, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Terasen Gas. “First Nations from across B.C., including Western Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, will make the journey along with nations from as far as the Alaskan border, and Washington State, to celebrate the region’s unique aboriginal culture and traditions.”
This year’s event is anticipated to be one of the largest in its 19-year history, coinciding with the 2008 North American Indigenous Games hosted by the Cowichan Tribes First Nation, August 3 to 10. Tribal Journey participants will also join the 2008 Games in honouring the athletes by escorting them during the Parade of Nations to the Opening Ceremonies on August 3.
"Over 65 Northwest Coast Native Americans, First Nations, and Metis groups will participate in Tribal Journeys, representing cultural rejuvenation, strength, and courage," stated Chief Lydia Hwitsum of the Cowichan Tribes. "This journey marks our collective commitment to our traditions and cultural teachings, and our relationship with the ocean. Cowichan is excited to welcome Terasen Gas aboard as a partner in sponsoring this celebration of First Nations' culture."
Over 80 ocean-going canoes will journey from over 50 points of origin across the Pacific Northwest, arriving at Cowichan Bay July 28. On their arrival, participants will take part in a traditional Coast Salish welcoming event. This will be followed by a four-day celebration in which Cowichan Tribes will welcome thousands of youth from across North America.
Terasen follows its Statement of Aboriginal Principles to conduct its business in a manner that respects the social, economic and cultural interests of First Nations and Aboriginal communities.
