Aboriginal relations
We are leaders in developing and building mutually beneficial working relationships with First Nations communities.
Terasen Gas has adopted a formal
Statement of Aboriginal Principles. We conduct business in a manner that respects the social, economic and cultural interests of First Nations communities.
Here are a few of our initiatives, in the interest of our goal to work collaboratively with, and support, First Nations:
Ahp-cii-uk
A Nuu-chal-nulth word that means 'Going the Right Way', Aph-cii-uk is a pilot project being run in three First Nations communities on Vancouver Island. Terasen Gas employees are participating in the project, while Health Canada and the BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation are funding the initiative.
Working in Ahousaht, located on Flores Island, off the coast of Tofino, Terasen has been supporting the community's vision of revitalizing the historic and renowned 11 km Wild Side trail. This short video celebrates the completion of the trail as community members and guests gather for the raising of a welcome figure to greet visitors. For more information visit

Skill Builder: A BC industry aboriginal training initiative
Together with our other sponsors, FortisBC, Corix Utilities, Spectra Energy, Enbridge, BC Hydro, Kinder Morgan, Trans Canada and BC Transmission Corporation, we are working proactively to educate and train First Nations youth for potential employment in the utility construction industry.
This initiative, called Skill Builder, was launched in 2009 and is held in communities across BC all year. Our
Skill Builder video provides an overview of the program and features two program participants working with Terasen Gas crews in the Fraser Valley.
Career opportunities
Terasen Gas posts career positions on The NationTalk Project, Canada's premier aboriginal newswire and employment service.
Partnered for pipeline extension
An agreement with the Squamish Nation and Lil'wat First Nation ensured training and material supply from both communities for the extension of our natural gas pipeline to the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
Providing employment
An ongoing relationship and discussions around working together has led to jobs for several members of the Chemainus First Nation.
Doing it right
To improve our right of way in the Indian River Valley, Terasen has partnered with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the British Columbia Transmission Corporation and the Ministry of Forests.
Digging carefully
Before we conduct any excavating in the Fraser Valley, we consult with Sto Lo Nation's Archaeology Department.
We have also participated in First Nations career fairs, the Aboriginal Women in Leadership Forum and are members of the Industry Council for Aboriginal Business (ICAB).
From helping preserve First Nation culture to providing new skills for the future; we're proud to work with aboriginal communities throughout BC.
