Aboriginal relations
We are leaders in developing and building mutually beneficial working relationships with First Nations communities.
Terasen Gas has adopted a formal
Statement of Aboriginal Principles. We conduct business in a manner that respects the social, economic and cultural interests of First Nations communities.
Here are a few of our initiatives, in the interest of our goal to work collaboratively with, and support, First Nations:
- BC Multi-Sector Aboriginal Leadership Initiative
Ahp-cii-uk, meaning ‘Going the Right Way’, is a pilot project being run in three First Nations in the
Nuu-chal-nulth Tribal Council on Vancouver Island. Terasen Gas employees (Bruce Falstead, Aboriginal Relations Manager; Ruth Sulentich, Community Relations Manager; and Lee Beran, Recruiting Manager) are participating in the project, while Health Canada and the BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation are funding this initiative. Terasen has been working in the community of Ahousaht, supporting the work to revitalize the historic and renowned 11 km Walk the Wild Side trail on Flores Island, off the coast of Tofino. In addition, six jobs have been created to develop a tourism industry around the trail. For more information visit BC Multi-Sector Aboriginal Leadership Initiative.
- Skill Builder: A BC industry aboriginal training initiative
We are working proactively to educate and train First Nations youth for potential employment in the utility construction industry. Other sponsoring employers include Corix Utilities, Spectra Energy, BC Hydro and BC Transmission Corporation. This initiative, called Skill Builder, was launched in 2009 and is held in communities across BC all year, giving First Nations youth valuable skills for future employment.
- Supporting aboriginal cuisine
In support of First Nation culture and enterprise, Terasen Gas is donating a natural gas barbecue for use by the Culinary Arts program of Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre. Students and their teacher/ celebrated native chef, Andrew George, will use the barbecue to prepare traditional aboriginal cuisine within their program.
- Career opportunities
Terasen Gas posts career positions on The NationTalk Project, Canada's premier aboriginal newswire and employment service.
- Partnered for pipeline extension
An agreement with the Squamish Nation and Lil'wat First Nation ensured training and material supply from both communities for the extension of our natural gas pipeline to the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
- Providing employment
An ongoing relationship and discussions around working together has led to jobs for several members of the Chemainus First Nation.
- Doing it right
To improve our right of way in the Indian River Valley, Terasen has partnered with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the British Columbia Transmission Corporation and the Ministry of Forests.
- Digging carefully
Before we conduct any excavating in the Fraser Valley, we consult with Sto Lo Nation's Archaeology Department.
We have also participated in First Nations career fairs, the Aboriginal Women in Leadership Forum and are members of the Industry Council for Aboriginal Business (ICAB).
From helping preserve First Nation culture to providing new skills for the future; we're proud to work with aboriginal communities throughout BC.
