Kids' safety programs
Terasen Gas Kids Strategy Program teaches children and their parents about natural gas safety. Since the program started in 2006, Terasen Gas employees have educated almost 4,000 students (Kindergarten to Grade 3) around the province. Children learn about the fundamentals of natural gas – where it comes from, how to use it, conserve it and how to be safe around it.
Terasen Gas Crosswalk Kids Program is in its fourth year in the Lower Mainland and Interior. Presented to schools located within 200 metres of a natural gas right-of-way, the classroom-based safety curriculum teaches kids about what’s located in marked right-of-ways and how to stay safe in them. After the presentation, schools receive a specially designed pair of crosswalk markers – outfitted with wheels – to help keep kids safe on their way to and from school.
The Terasen Jr. website teaches kids about natural gas safety, science and the environment. In addition to the web-based content, the Terasen Jr. program includes scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers, bookmarks and activity books.
Our employees invest in communities, too
Terasen Gas employees are committed to giving back to the communities where they live and work.
Our Community Giving Program helps Terasen Gas employees support their local communities. The first annual Terasen Community Day was held in April 2008. Employees and their families participated in community projects in Victoria, Kelowna and Surrey. Employees and their families volunteered their time and talents, and Terasen Gas made a corporate donation as well.
Community Living, Victoria
Terasen Gas volunteers completed renovations including gardening, replacing fencing, creating a patio area and building a wheelchair friendly path in the backyard. They also built up existing slopes and raised garden beds to make the area more wheelchair accessible.
Community Living Victoria has operated in the Victoria area for the past 53 years. In addition to 15 group homes, Community Living Victoria provides a range of services to children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.
Habitat for Humanity, Kelowna
Terasen Gas and Fortis BC employees put final touches on two housing units, including landscaping and constructing a fence. Terasen Gas also donated a natural gas stove and furnace for the two houses.
Habitat for Humanity Kelowna is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, a non-profit housing organization, that works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing.
Holland Park, Surrey
Terasen Gas volunteers, along with their family and friends, planted Terasen Garden at Holland Park. More than 1,500 indigenous plants were used to create the garden, leaving a green jewel for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. The park is an amazing centre for community celebrations.
Employee Giving
Terasen Gas supports and encourages employees to give their time and efforts to their chosen charitable projects. Employees can also support their cause with donations. Once a year employees can apply for a $300 donation for the organization they wish to support.
Terasen Gas also supports – with a 50 per cent donation match – employees who deduct funds from their pay and donate them to one of these worthy causes:
Warm Hearts Charitable Foundation supports the health and well being of the communities close to the hearts of Terasen Gas employees. Since its inception in 1994, almost $500,000 has been donated by employees to charitable organizations throughout the company’s service areas. Warm Hearts was founded and is still managed today by employee volunteers.
United Way
The United Way addresses community issues of poverty and integration in children and seniors. They create and support initiatives including childhood nutrition, developmental and educational success, and senior health and independence and more.
The United Way receives year long support through employee payroll donations.
Other organizations
Once a year, employees can also choose to give directly to a registered not-for-profit organization of their choice. Terasen Gas will match the donation by 50 per cent when the donation is between $100 and $1,000.
